Before moving to Milan, I had no idea what I'd be getting myself into, all I knew was that I needed to take this step. I wasn't happy with where I was in life and I had the opportunity to study in Italy, so I jumped.
I want to give you some tips I wish I knew before coming here. . . .
- Don't listen to your mother;
You're mother probably warned you about the men before moving to Europe, well don't worry. If you're blonde and you're moving to a country where there are very few blondes, that does not mean you're going to constantly be hit on and asked for your hand in marriage.
Believe me when I tell you that the only 'catcalls' you'll be receiving are from the occasional construction worker and far too comfortable 'old guy' in the restaurant. So basically, same as home.
- "The customer is always right" does not apply to Italy
LET ME TELL YOU. I have never experienced the level of frustration as when a male server told me I wasn't allowed to order food. . . .at a restaurant. I'm well aware that I was ordering my food out of order and that in Italy you might as well be asking for their head on a silver platter with the reaction I got. But I just wanted my damn tiramisu and I had already eaten dinner at home, is that too much to ask??
- Don't re-vamp your wardrobe right before moving to the fashion capital of the world
The biggest mistake I made was doing a crazy shopping trip before moving. First of all, that's horrible for your suitcase, don't pack too much, pack as little as possible. As you're living your life you will realize what you need and then you can go purchase it. You're in a new environment, so your skinny jeans from your favorite store at home might not be the best for the fashion in Milan during winter.
- European education system is test heavy. . . .homework who?
I was so worried that I'd be overwhelmed when transitioning into the European education system. . . . . .I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't be. Unless you plan on taking S.T.E.M focused courses, don't expect to be stressed or overwhelmed with your course work. I'm currently doing 5 courses and I still have time to enjoy my weekends, travel, do self-care, exercise, and make my meals. You will be fine, take a breath:)
